Inspection layout

An inspection layout structures the areas, items, notes, and photos used to document unit or property condition during inspections.

Definition

An inspection layout is the structure of an inspection form: the areas, items, condition fields, notes, and photo prompts an inspector follows during a walkthrough. It can be based on unit or property records, copied from a prior inspection, or built from a standardized template. The layout determines how findings are organized for review, reporting, and follow-up work.

Example

For a move-out inspection, the layout might group checks by room—kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and living area—with items such as flooring, appliances, walls, and fixtures. The technician documents condition, adds photos and notes, and any failed items are routed into follow-up work orders.
