Issue category

An issue category groups maintenance requests by problem type so teams can route, filter, prioritize, and report on work orders.

Definition

An issue category is a label that groups a maintenance request by the type of problem, such as plumbing, HVAC, appliance, or pest control. Teams use issue categories to filter work, route requests, apply the right workflow, and report on recurring maintenance patterns. In many systems, a category can contain more specific issue types, such as “Bed bugs” under “Pest Control.”

Example

A resident reports roaches in a unit. The work order is assigned to the Pest Control issue category, which helps the manager route it to the right technician or vendor and trigger a pest-related closing checklist before the work order is completed.

Why It Matters?

Issue categories help operations leaders standardize how maintenance work is classified across communities. That makes it easier to prioritize urgent work, configure response targets, trigger the right technician questions, and analyze where maintenance time and spending are concentrated.
