A move-in date is when a resident is expected to take possession of a unit and begin using the home.

Definition

A move-in date is the date a resident is expected to take possession of a unit and physically move in. It may be the same as the lease start date, but the two dates can differ: the lease start date controls the contractual rent obligation, while the move-in date reflects when the resident can actually enter and use the home.

Example

A resident’s lease starts on May 1, but the unit is not ready until May 3. The operations team records May 3 as the move-in date, schedules the move-in inspection for that day, confirms keys and access are ready, and makes sure any required move-in report is reviewed and signed.

Why It Matters?

The move-in date drives day-of coordination across leasing, maintenance, accounting, and resident services. Accurate move-in dates help teams confirm unit readiness, schedule inspections, prepare access, communicate arrival instructions, and avoid last-minute delays that can hurt the resident’s first experience.
