Natural Language Processing

NLP helps computers understand and respond to human language in leasing, maintenance, and resident communication workflows.

Definition

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of AI that helps computers understand, interpret, and generate human language. In multifamily operations, it is commonly used to interpret prospect or resident messages, identify intent, and produce an appropriate response. NLP can work with written text and, when paired with speech technology, spoken conversations.

Example

A prospect texts, “Do you have any two-bedrooms available next month?” An NLP-enabled system can recognize that the person is asking about availability, unit type, and timing, then route the inquiry or draft a relevant response for the leasing team.

Why It Matters?

NLP matters because many high-volume multifamily workflows start as natural-language messages: leasing questions, maintenance requests, renewal concerns, and resident feedback. When used well, it can help teams triage requests, reduce repetitive manual review, and respond more consistently across a portfolio.
