Definition

Overflow is the set of packages or deliveries that exceed a property’s normal storage capacity, such as when lockers, package rooms, or staff workflows are full. In multifamily operations, it often happens during high-volume periods or when oversized, perishable, or misplaced items require special handling. A clear overflow process defines where these items go, who monitors them, and how residents are notified.

Example

During the December holiday rush, a 300-unit community’s package lockers fill by 2 p.m. The team moves remaining deliveries to a designated overflow room, logs each item, sends resident pickup notices, and prioritizes oversized and perishable packages for same-day retrieval.

Why It Matters?

Overflow matters because unmanaged package volume can create cluttered common areas, resident frustration, lost-package disputes, and extra work for onsite teams. Operations leaders need a consistent overflow plan to protect service quality, reduce interruptions, and keep leasing and resident-service staff focused on higher-value work.
