Payment Plan

A payment plan lets residents pay owed rent or charges over scheduled installments while teams track balances, payment history, and follow-up.

Definition

A payment plan is an agreement that lets a resident pay overdue rent or other charges over scheduled installments instead of all at once. In multifamily operations, it is typically managed alongside the resident’s outstanding charges and payment history. Payment plans can support residents who need flexibility while giving teams a clear structure for follow-up and collections.

Example

A resident owes $1,200 after the rent due date. The onsite team sets up a payment plan for $400 today, $400 on the resident’s next payday, and $400 by the end of the month, then tracks the plan with the resident’s balance and payment history.

Why It Matters?

Payment plans matter because they create a documented path to rent recovery while giving residents a practical way to resolve delinquency. For operations leaders, consistent payment-plan tracking can reduce ad hoc follow-up, support timely collections, and improve the resident experience during sensitive financial situations.
