Subcool is a refrigerant temperature measurement used to check HVAC charge and guide maintenance decisions.

Definition

Subcool is the temperature decrease of liquid refrigerant below its saturation, or condensing, temperature at a given pressure. It is commonly measured at the condenser outlet and used to verify whether an HVAC system has the proper refrigerant charge. It is a charging measurement, not a comfort setting.

Example

During a no-cooling work order at an apartment, a maintenance technician measures the liquid-line temperature and pressure at the outdoor condenser, calculates subcool, and uses that reading to check whether the refrigerant charge is appropriate before making adjustments.
