Definition

An incident status transition is the change of an incident record from one status to another as the issue moves through its workflow. Common statuses can include Open, an optional review step, and Complete, where the record may become read-only and the final incident report is produced. Some systems validate required incident details before allowing the status to move forward.

Example

A resident reports a slip-and-fall in a community hallway. The site team creates an Open incident, adds witness details and photos, moves it For Review for regional approval, and then marks it Complete once all required information is documented.

Why It Matters?

Clear incident status transitions help operations leaders know whether an issue is newly reported, under review, delayed, or finished. They also support accountability by showing when teams must collect required information, notify residents or stakeholders, and close the loop without losing key details.
