Move-Out

A move-out is the resident departure process that closes occupancy and starts inspection, final billing, and unit turnover work.

Definition

A move-out is the resident departure process at the end of occupancy, when the property records the move-out date, confirms any final billable day, and completes the steps needed to close out the resident’s lease. In multifamily operations, move-out typically connects resident communication, key return, inspection, damage documentation, final account handling, and the start of turnover or make-ready work.

Example

A resident gives notice and returns keys on the scheduled move-out date. The onsite team records the move-out, completes a unit inspection, documents damage beyond normal wear and tear, creates any needed work orders, and hands the unit to maintenance for make-ready before the next resident moves in.

Why It Matters?

Move-outs affect vacancy days, final charges, maintenance scheduling, and the next resident’s move-in experience. A consistent move-out process helps teams reduce delays, preserve inspection accuracy, coordinate turns, and keep leasing, maintenance, and accounting aligned.
