Move-out date

A move-out date is the date a resident vacates a unit, triggering inspections, final billing, turnover, and make-ready work.

Definition

A move-out date is the scheduled or effective date a resident vacates an apartment and the operator can begin the move-out and turnover workflow. It is used to trigger tasks such as move-out inspections, final billing decisions, make-ready work, and planning for the next resident. In some situations, the move-out date may differ from the last billable day, such as when a resident breaks a lease.

Example

A resident gives notice that they will vacate Unit 204 on May 31. The property team records May 31 as the move-out date, schedules the move-out inspection, and uses that date to start the unit turn plan for cleaning, repairs, and make-ready work.

Why It Matters?

The move-out date anchors the timeline for vacancy, inspections, final charges, maintenance scheduling, and rent-ready targets. Accurate move-out dates help operations leaders reduce downtime between residents, coordinate teams and vendors, and maintain consistent portfolio reporting.
