Move-Out Inspection

A move-out inspection is a documented assessment of a rental unit when a resident vacates. It records the unit’s condition, often with notes and photos, and helps distinguish resident-caused damage from normal wear and tear. In multifamily operations, the findings typically feed into repair work, deposit reconciliation, and the unit turn process.

After a resident returns keys, the maintenance supervisor walks the unit with a standard checklist, photographs damaged flooring and a broken appliance, and creates follow-up work orders so the unit can be repaired, cleaned, and made ready for the next resident.

Move-out inspections give operations leaders a consistent way to document unit condition, plan turn work, and support fair deposit decisions. When inspections are completed promptly and recorded in one system of record, teams can reduce delays, improve accountability, and keep vacant units moving toward readiness.
