Requirement exemption

A requirement exemption is an approved exception to a standard compliance requirement. In multifamily operations, it often means a vendor or other party does not have to submit a specific required document, or in some cases does not have to meet a broader set of organizational compliance requirements. If the exemption is canceled, the requirement can return to a not-submitted state so documentation can be provided.

A landscaping vendor is normally required to submit a particular insurance document before working at a property. After review, the operations team approves an exemption because the requirement does not apply to that vendor’s scope of work, so the vendor is marked as exempt for that document instead of being blocked for non-submission.

Requirement exemptions help operations teams handle legitimate exceptions without treating every missing document as a compliance failure. Clear exemption tracking also reduces confusion for site teams, vendors, and central compliance staff by showing whether a requirement is missing, rejected, accepted, expired, or formally exempted.
