Resident Engagement

Define resident engagement and why communication, feedback, and participation matter for multifamily resident experience and retention.

Definition

Resident engagement is the ongoing, meaningful interaction between residents and the property team, services, amenities, and community. In multifamily operations, it includes routine communication, announcements, feedback, maintenance and payment touchpoints, events, and renewal-related conversations across channels like text, email, and voice. It is different from satisfaction because it reflects whether residents are actively participating, responding, and staying connected.

Example

A community sends a targeted email and SMS announcement about a planned water shutoff, tracks which residents received it, reviews replies, routes urgent concerns to the site team, and uses resident feedback to improve the next notice.

Why it matters

Resident engagement helps operations leaders deliver consistent service across communities, reduce missed messages, and identify issues before they become escalations. Tracking engagement also shows whether residents are receiving, responding to, or opting out of communications, which helps teams improve outreach and protect the resident experience. Strong engagement can support satisfaction, loyalty, renewals, and reputation.
