Application Programming Interface

An Application Programming Interface (API) is a set of rules that lets different software systems communicate and share data. In multifamily operations, APIs commonly help connect systems for leasing, accounting, maintenance, payments, screening, reporting, and resident services so teams do not have to re-enter the same information in multiple places.

A property management system can use an API to send a new resident’s move-in details to a maintenance work order system, so the team can automatically schedule lock changes, inspections, and welcome tasks without manually copying data.

APIs matter because multifamily operations often depend on several systems that need the same property, resident, lease, payment, and work order data. Strong API connections can reduce duplicate entry, improve reporting accuracy, support centralized operations, and make it easier to add or replace technology without rebuilding every workflow from scratch.
