Financial move-out

Financial move-out is the resident account closeout after move-out, including final charges, deposits, refunds, balances, and collections.

Definition

A financial move-out is the financial closeout that happens after a resident leaves an apartment. It includes final charges, security deposit application or refund, unpaid balances, disputes, and any follow-up needed to collect amounts owed. The goal is to close the resident account accurately and keep property accounting records in balance.

Example

A resident moves out on June 30. The property team completes the move-out inspection, adds approved cleaning and damage charges, applies the security deposit, issues a refund if money is owed back, or records a remaining balance for follow-up if the resident still owes the property.

Why it matters

Financial move-outs affect cash flow, resident experience, compliance, and the accuracy of property financials. If final charges, refunds, deposits, or balances are delayed or handled inconsistently, teams can create accounting errors, missed collections, refund delays, and resident disputes.
