Full exemption

A full exemption is an approved exception that removes a vendor from an organization’s standard compliance requirements. In multifamily operations, it is typically used when leadership decides the vendor does not need to complete the normal compliance process for a specific business reason. This is broader than a document-level exemption, which only excuses one requirement.

A regional maintenance team uses a specialty contractor for a one-time emergency repair at a single property. After review, the operations leader approves a full exemption, so the contractor is not required to complete the company’s usual vendor compliance checklist for that engagement.

Full exemptions give operations leaders flexibility, but they also create risk if they are not reviewed and tracked carefully. Clear approval workflows help teams keep vendor lists clean, avoid unnecessary onboarding for one-time work, and maintain control over compliance decisions.
