Large Language Model

A plain-language definition of Large Language Models (LLMs) for multifamily operations leaders, with examples and operational risks.

Definition

A Large Language Model (LLM) is an AI system trained on very large amounts of text so it can understand, process, and generate human-like language. In multifamily operations, an LLM can help with text-heavy work such as drafting replies, summarizing notes, classifying inquiries, or turning resident messages into clearer next steps. Its output should be reviewed when accuracy matters, because AI can produce false or unsupported information that sounds confident.

Example

A centralized leasing team receives a high volume of email inquiries. An LLM summarizes each message, identifies details like move-in timing and pet needs, and drafts a response for a leasing associate to review before sending.

Why it matters

LLMs matter because multifamily operations run on language: prospect emails, resident chats, guest cards, work orders, renewal notices, and internal policies. Used with clear review steps, they can reduce manual writing and triage work, especially for centralized teams. Without review, they can create risk by producing inaccurate or unsupported answers.
