Human-in-the-Loop

Human-in-the-loop keeps people involved in reviewing or approving higher-risk AI actions in multifamily operations.

Definition

Human-in-the-loop is an AI design approach where a person reviews, approves, or intervenes before certain automated actions are completed. In multifamily operations, it is commonly used when a decision affects residents, applicants, safety, payments, or compliance. The goal is to let automation handle routine work while keeping human judgment and accountability in higher-risk or ambiguous situations.

Example

A maintenance request comes in reporting a ceiling leak. AI categorizes it as urgent, checks available details, and routes it to the right queue, but a maintenance coordinator reviews the issue before authorizing an emergency vendor dispatch and approving the final invoice.

Why it matters

Human-in-the-loop helps operations leaders balance speed with control. It can reduce manual work while keeping people involved in decisions that may carry financial, legal, safety, resident-experience, or Fair Housing implications. It also gives teams a clearer escalation path when AI is uncertain or when an exception does not fit standard rules.
