On notice

On notice means a resident has formally stated intent to vacate, making the occupied unit part of future vacancy and exposure planning.

Definition

On notice means a current resident has formally told the property team they intend to move out. The unit may still be occupied today, but operations should treat it as a future vacancy. This status is commonly used to start move-out workflows and update availability or exposure reporting.

Example

A resident tells the leasing office they will move out on August 31. The team marks the resident on notice, stops renewal follow-up, starts move-out tasks, and includes the unit in upcoming availability planning.

Why it matters

For operations leaders, on notice is an early signal of future vacancy risk. Tracking it accurately helps teams forecast exposure, plan turns, adjust leasing priorities, and avoid continuing renewal outreach to residents who have already decided to leave.
