Smart Lock

A smart lock is an electronic keyless lock used to manage apartment, amenity, staff, vendor, and tour access.

Definition

A smart lock is an electronic lock that enables keyless entry using credentials such as PIN codes, mobile access, digital keys, cards, or fobs. In multifamily operations, smart locks can support remote access management, temporary or scheduled permissions, audit trails, and connections to other property systems. They are commonly used for apartment units, shared spaces, self-guided tours, maintenance access, and move-in or move-out workflows.

Example

A leasing team gives a prospect a temporary access code for a self-guided tour that works only during the scheduled appointment window. After the tour ends, the code expires automatically, and the access log shows when the unit was entered.

Why it matters

Smart locks help operations leaders reduce dependence on physical keys, manual key handoffs, and onsite staff availability. They can improve visibility into who accessed a unit or common area, support centralized workflows, and make leasing, maintenance, vendor access, and move-ins easier to coordinate at scale.
